Skiers high five at Sunlight Ski Resort

It’s Open Season for Winter Fun in Glenwood Springs

  • December 5, 2024

As hunting season winds down, a different kind of open season takes over in Glenwood Springs—and it’s one jam-packed with wintertime adventures!

Whether you’re carving turns on the slopes, zooming through the alpine landscape on a snowmobile, or reclining in the steaming hot springs, it’s open season for winter recreation in Glenwood Springs.

Open Season for Skiing and Snowboarding

The snow is accumulating in the mountains! For those craving fresh powder, Sunlight Mountain Resort officially opened on Saturday, Nov. 30. It’s the local choice for action-packed skiing and snowboarding without the mega-resort crowds. Sunlight features 700 acres of terrain, 75 trails ranging from gentle bunny slopes to thigh-burning double-black diamond steeps, and a terrain park for showing off tricks. The resort’s other winning traits include free parking, a centrally located lodge for easy meetups, in-town and on-site equipment rentals, shuttle service from six locations around town, and a ski and snowboarding school for all ages. But intangibles like its laid-back vibe, friendly lifties, and affordable food and drinks give Sunlight the edge over other ski resorts.

Open Season for Snowmobiling Adventures

Sunlight Snowmobiling Tours offers full-throttle adventures into the pristine backcountry surrounding Glenwood Springs starting in December. With hundreds of miles of trails to explore, guides lead the way on trips that can last anywhere from a one-hour cruise to a zoomy 2.5-hour expedition. Either way, you’ll traverse a snowscape into White River National Forest where the scenery will take your breath away as will the ride!

Open Season for Nordic Skiing

If you prefer your winter fun on the serene side, consider free cross-country or snowshoeing trails through beautiful Babbish Gulch. This trail system opens in December and offers 29 kilometers of meticulously groomed trails. Located at Sunlight Mountain Resort, Babbish Gulch is off the beaten path and loved for its peaceful seclusion and Instagram-worthy views. Rent cross-country gear or snowshoes at gear shops in Glenwood Springs. Another option for either cross-country or snowshoeing is Ironbridge Golf Club. The maintained trails loop through the course, and you may see wildlife including elk and bald eagles while you trek.

Open Season for Ice Skating

The Glenwood Springs Recreation Center rink features a large ice oval ideal for a few hours of carefree fun. The outdoor rink is covered and open as soon as the weather permits, typically beginning mid-December. With a lively atmosphere and skate rentals on-site, it’s a delightful outing for kids, couples, and anyone looking to twirl into winter joy.

Open Season for Winter on the Mountain

The holiday spirit is in full swing at Winter on the Mountain at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. With lights, holiday cheer, thrill rides, cave tours, and more, the mountaintop park transforms into a magical winter wonderland in November and December. Think festive live music, visits from Santa and the Grinch, and fire pits perfect for warming up and roasting s’mores.

Open Season for Hot Springs

Cap off all the thrills and chills with a languid, laid-back dip in Glenwood’s geothermal waters. No winter trip to Glenwood Springs is complete without a long, luxurious soak in the hot springs. Whether you choose the world-famous Glenwood Hot Springs Pool or the tranquility of Iron Mountain Hot Springs/WorldSprings, you’ll emerge relaxed and rejuvenated.

Open Your Calendar

Make plans today for winter adventures in Glenwood Springs, all open to enjoy now or soon. The slopes are snow-covered, the trails are groomed, the ice is smooth, the lights twinkle, and the hot springs beckon. What are you waiting for?
