Skiers high five at Sunlight Ski Resort

It’s Open Season for Winter Fun in Glenwood Springs

As hunting season winds down, a different kind of open season takes over in Glenwood Springs—and it’s one jam-packed with wintertime adventures!

Whether you’re carving turns on the slopes, zooming through the alpine landscape on a snowmobile, or reclining in the steaming hot springs, it’s open season for winter recreation in Glenwood Springs.

Open Season for Skiing and Snowboarding

The snow is accumulating in the mountains! For those craving fresh powder, Sunlight Mountain Resort officially opened on Saturday, Nov. 30. It’s the local choice for action-packed skiing and snowboarding without the mega-resort crowds. Sunlight features 700 acres of terrain, 75 trails ranging from gentle bunny slopes to thigh-burning double-black diamond steeps, and a terrain park for showing off tricks. The resort’s other winning traits include free parking, a centrally located lodge for easy meetups, in-town and on-site equipment rentals, shuttle service from six locations around town, and a ski and snowboarding school for all ages. But intangibles like its laid-back vibe, friendly lifties, and affordable food and drinks give Sunlight the edge over other ski resorts.

Open Season for Snowmobiling Adventures

Sunlight Snowmobiling Tours offers full-throttle adventures into the pristine backcountry surrounding Glenwood Springs starting in December. With hundreds of miles of trails to explore, guides lead the way on trips that can last anywhere from a one-hour cruise to a zoomy 2.5-hour expedition. Either way, you’ll traverse a snowscape into White River National Forest where the scenery will take your breath away as will the ride!

Open Season for Nordic Skiing

If you prefer your winter fun on the serene side, consider free cross-country or snowshoeing trails through beautiful Babbish Gulch. This trail system opens in December and offers 29 kilometers of meticulously groomed trails. Located at Sunlight Mountain Resort, Babbish Gulch is off the beaten path and loved for its peaceful seclusion and Instagram-worthy views. Rent cross-country gear or snowshoes at gear shops in Glenwood Springs. Another option for either cross-country or snowshoeing is Ironbridge Golf Club. The maintained trails loop through the course, and you may see wildlife including elk and bald eagles while you trek.

Open Season for Ice Skating
