Glenwood Springs’ two most iconic attractions—Hotel Colorado and Glenwood Hot Springs Resort—are making major changes that will improve the visitor experience while still honoring their storied pasts.
The next time you visit Glenwood Springs, Colorado, you’ll notice some big changes especially if you overnight at Hotel Colorado or go for a soak in the thermal waters at Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. Both landmark properties are rejuvenating their look, adding more comfort, style and new experiences into the mix.
Hotel Colorado Guest Room Renovations
After a delay due to the COVID pandemic, the Melville family’s multiyear, multi-million-dollar restoration of Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs has resumed. All guest rooms, along with corridors and the main stairway, are receiving floor-to-ceiling makeovers.
When the Hotel Colorado was built in 1893 by Walter Devereux, a silver baron and one of Glenwood Springs’ founding fathers, no expense was spared in its construction. Today, the Melville family continues the tradition of caring for and restoring the hotel lovingly referred to throughout history as the “Grand Dame” of Glenwood Springs.
The first phase of the $10 million restoration began in 2019 with renovation of the hotel’s meeting and banquet rooms, which revealed long-hidden, original brick fireplaces and white oak flooring.
Phase two, underway since early January, focuses on elevating guest rooms with a new look and amenities. The look and feel are fresh and clean with a classic design that’s both modern and appropriate to the historic period of the hotel.
Upgrades include carpet, paint, window coverings, furniture, mattresses, linens, televisions, telephones, ceiling fans, lighting, fixtures and artwork. All of the guest room furniture has been custom made to respect the hotel’s original Italian villa design. The renovations are expected to wrap up this summer.
Therapy Pool at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort Gets Some TLC
Also getting some much-needed love is another one of Glenwood’s signature attractions. The Therapy Pool at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort has been rejuvenating guests—body, mind and spirit—with its powerful healing effects since 1960. The smaller of two main pools, the water temperature tops out at 104˚F and is a favorite place for visitors to decompress year-round.
Renovations to the Therapy Pool began in February and will add greater comfort, new features and improved accessibility for pool-goers. When completed in late May, visitors can look forward to:
- Six hydrotherapy loungers for total body relaxation.
- Three hydrotherapy power showers for soothing upper body massages.
- Improved lighting and high-end surface coating materials.
- An all-new ADA ramp, along with the existing ADA lift, for guests with mobility challenges.
While the Therapy Pool is being upgraded, Glenwood Hot Springs Resort guests can soak in Hanging Lake Pool on the west end, which is temporarily being filled with water geothermally heated to 104˚ and is part of the larger Sopris Splash Zone.
