Spend Your Off-Slope Downtime in Glenwood Springs

  • December 3, 2020

With spas, hot springs and outdoor adventures, a day off the slopes can be as relaxing or exhilarating as you want when you spend it in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

You’ve planned a glorious ski vacation to the Colorado Rocky Mountains and you can’t wait to hit the slopes and powder stashes at your favorite resort—Aspen, Snowmass, Highlands, Buttermilk, Sunlight Mountain, Beaver Creek or Vail. The snow is pristine, and conditions are ideal. When you arrive, you hit the slopes hard. It’s what you’ve been waiting for, but by the mid-point of your getaway you and your thighs are ready for a break. Mix it up with a short trip to nearby Glenwood Springs where you can recharge your batteries any way you like: book a massage, soak or steam in geothermal hot springs, explore spectacular caves or make fresh tracks snowmobiling.

Getting to Glenwood Springs

Valley-wide public transportation makes it easy for guests at Aspen-area resorts to get to Glenwood Springs. The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) offers bus service to stops all along Highway 82, including the towns of Basalt and Carbondale. Visitors can also opt to take Valley Taxi, a cab service that provides rides throughout the valley. From Vail Resorts, driving is most practical.

With only a day in Glenwood Springs, you have some decisions to make about how to spend your time. Mix and match the activities below to get the most from your day off the slopes.

Geothermal Goodness.

If your body needs some TLC, make hot springs attractions your first stop. The town has three: Glenwood Hot Springs Resort has the world’s largest hot springs pool and offers guests a historic setting for soaking. Iron Mountain Hot Springs features 16 individual soaking pools as well as a freshwater family pool with an elevated whirlpool, all situated alongside the Colorado River. Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves is a unique underground steam cave with spa and salon services up top. For maximum benefit, plan to spend a few hours soaking or steaming.

Spa Time.

Now that you’re beginning to feel the tension dissolve, take relaxation one step further with a professional massage or spa treatment. Glenwood Springs is home to multiple spas where you can schedule an hour or more of therapeutic full-body bliss. A deep tissue, warm stone or sports massage can help work out any remaining tightness and help you ski better when you return to the slopes tomorrow.

Choose Your Thrills.

Snowmobiling

With only one day in Glenwood Springs, those looking for an action-oriented day off will have to choose between high-octane and high-flying fun.

  • Sunlight Snowmobile Tours will take you into the backcountry where there are over 100 miles of groomed track for easy riding the whole family can enjoy. For something more challenging, steer your sled through meadows of untouched powder. The tour company has all the gear you need to stay warm and go full speed ahead!
  • Another option is to spend the day exploring at America’s only mountain-top theme park. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is currently celebrating its annual Winter on the Mountain which features lighted thrill rides including the Alpine Coaster, indoor games and attractions and cave tours that include a visit to one of the most highly decorated cave rooms in Colorado.
