Easy Riders: Plan a Pitstop in Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Glenwood Springs is a motorcycle-friendly town in the Colorado mountains. Even if you’re just passing through on your way to or from Sturgis, get out of the saddle for hot springs soak, a cold beer and a good night’s rest.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the biggest and oldest bike-fest in the U.S. Over 500,000 riders turn up for 10 crazy days in August. Non-stop events include rides, races, big-name concerts and more in Sturgis, South Dakota. Fans come from all over the world to attend, many passing through Glenwood Springs on their way to and from Sturgis.

Glenwood Springs, a town for motorcyclists

This year, when you head out on the highway, make a pitstop in a town that loves motorcycle riders. Glenwood Springs recently hosted over 150 riders who rumbled through town in June for the annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride, which raises money for chronically ill children. This past Memorial Day, members of Rolling Thunder honored fallen service men and women at a somber ceremony at Rosebud Cemetery. In July, the annual Glenwood Springs Car & Motorcycle Show attracts locals and visitors to admire new and vintage model machines.

“Glenwood Springs was originally named Defiance. It was a pretty raucous place at one time and we’re proud of that rough and rowdy history,” said Lisa Langer, Director of Tourism Promotion for Glenwood Springs and a former South Dakota resident. “I think people associate a born-to-be-wild element with motorcyclists, which still resonates with the western roots of Glenwood Springs. Bikers like coming here, and we like having them.”

Relaxation after your ride

Glenwood Springs is a perfect spot to pull over for a rest stop on the way to or from Sturgis. The town’s three hot springs attractions are ideal for relaxing after a long ride. Soak in either the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool or Iron Mountain Hot Springs, where the heat and minerals do wonders for tight shoulders, legs and sore muscles. For something a little different, yet just as soothing, the Yampah Vapor Caves provides a natural, underground steam bath.

Other creature comforts that await the road-weary include great food and drink options. Glenwood Springs dining goes beyond roadhouse offerings with fare that helps you close the distance from famished to satisfied. You’ll find it all, from burgers to ribeye steaks and pasta to pho. When it comes to imbibing, Glenwood Springs watering holes pour your favorite cocktails, beer, wine and spirits. Don’t miss the chance stop in at Doc Holliday’s Tavern for a cold one and a game of pool.

When you’re ready to rest your well-traveled body for the night, count on welcoming, comfortable and affordable accommodations with ample parking for motorcycles. Lodging in Glenwood Springs includes historic hotels, independently owned motels, national chains and more.
