Glenwood Caverns Named One of the 10 Best Caves in America by USA TODAY

Glenwood Caverns, a top visitor attraction in Glenwood Springs, was named one of USA TODAY’s Best Caves.

For over half a billion years, the landscape in and around Glenwood Springs, Colorado has been a hotbed of geological activity. Over time, the earth’s natural processes have created or contributed to some the town’s most iconic places. The topography of Glenwood Canyon; the geothermal amenities of Glenwood Hot Springs, Iron Mountain Hot Springs and the Yampah Vapor Caves, all owe their existence to the herculean forces of Mother Nature.

Glenwood Caverns which plumbs the depths of Iron Mountain is no exception.  In fact, the underground landscape at Glenwood Caverns is so impressive that USA TODAY included it on its list of 10 Best Caves. This is the third time one of Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park’s attractions has been honored with a 10Best Award from USA TODAY.

Even without the accolades, the subterranean scenery is nothing short of spectacular thanks to the conservation efforts of the owners. Glenwood Caverns originally opened to the public as the Fairy Caves in 1895, but closed at the onset of World War I. The caves were closed for 82 years until owners Steve and Jeanne Beckley reopened the caverns in 1999. The Beckleys have employed rigorous, contemporary, scientific preservation methods to protect the living and historic sections of the caves. Glenwood Caverns is the largest public show cave in Colorado and includes the most highly decorated cave room in the state, King’s Row. Two guided walking cave tours and an on-your-belly wild tour are available. Over the years, the park has grown to include thrill rides, family attractions and entertainment that attract visitors from around the world.
