Glenwood Springs: Geothermal Epicenter of Colorado Hot Springs

Though Colorado is dotted with hot springs, Glenwood Springs is one of the few places that offers multiple geothermal attractions that are all open to the public.

Most Colorado hot springs towns provide visitors with one or two choices for enjoying the mineral water amenities; some hot springs pools are private and require guests to book a room. Glenwood Springs is one of the few towns with three distinctive hot springs attractions at which everyone is always welcome.

1. Glenwood Hot Springs. Home of the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool, the resort actually has two pools, both fed by the 122°F/51°C Yampah spring. The big pool is cooled to a temperature that’s perfect for playing and swimming laps, about 90°F/32°C. The smaller therapy pool is 104°F/40°C, lined with benches and graduated steps, making it ideal for a soothing soak. Open until 10 p.m. daily.

2. Iron Mountain Hot Springs. Located on a terraced slope on the bank of the Colorado River are 16 mineral hot spring pools, each one a different shape and temperature. Outdoor seating and a large fresh water pool provide a respite from the heat. Open until 10 p.m. daily.

Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves

3. Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves. Instead of soaking in hot spring water, try an underground steam bath instead. The vapor-filled caves have been in use since the time of the Ute Indians. Hot spring water flows through channels within the caves, filling them with mineral-rich steam touted to detoxify the body and heal a variety of ailments. Open until 9 p.m. daily.
