Colorado Summer Wind Down: Things to do in Before it’s Over

  • September 17, 2019

There’s still plenty of time to splash, raft, hike and engage in all your favorite summertime activities in Glenwood Springs!

Sure, the kids are back in school, Labor Day sales are over, and leaves are starting to turn, but the days are still plenty warm in the Colorado mountains. In fact, late summer and early fall are ripe for heading to Glenwood Springs for an array of fun-filled outdoor activities before the snow falls.

Rafting.

Lower flows actually make for an action-packed rafting trip through Glenwood Canyon. During high water, hydraulics like Shoshone Rapids are off-limits; with less volume, whitewater is still energetic but navigable. Another perk of late season rafting is that in-river hot springs become more accessible as flows recede. Rafting guides will often make a pitstop at their favorite soaking spots this time of year.

Hiking.

Fewer people congest Glenwood’s popular hiking trails in late summer, most notably Hanging Lake. While permits are required to hike the famous trail, they are easier to come by in September and October. Other area trails worth exploring include Red Mountain Trail, Doc Holliday Trail and Glenwood Canyon Overlook Trail.

Hot Springs.

Any month is ideal for a soothing hot springs soak. The new Sopris Splash Zone at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is open weekends throughout September and into October as weather permits. Iron Mountain Hot Springs, with its 16 soaking pools overlooking the Colorado River, is a serene spot to watch the world go by. A natural steam bath at Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves is another alternative for mineral-based rejuvenation.

Cycling.

If you’re a cycling and mountain biking enthusiast, make the most of sunny days. Pack on miles of riding along paved trails. The Rio Grande stretches from Glenwood Springs to Aspen, while the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path follows the curves of the Colorado River. For off-road riding, head out on Grandstaff, Boy Scout, Jeanne Golay, South Canyon or Wulfsohn trails.

Thrill Rides.

The rides at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park are still in full swing throughout September and October, including those that’ll have you screaming from start to stop—the Giant Canyon Swing, the Haunted Mine Drop, the Cliffhanger Roller Coaster and more.

Fishing.

Here fishy, fishy. Chances are good you’ll hook a few fish this month. With summer crowds gone, there’s less pressure on aquatic life. Cast away fishing on the area’s rivers and streams, including on nearby Gold Medal waters.

Golfing.

Glenwood’s greens are open for play. Late summer and early fall provide ideal temperatures and conditions to play a round. Schedule a tee time to golf at one of the seven nearby courses.

Paragliding.

For those who want to close out summer with a sky high adventure, nothing rivals the thrill and freedom of soaring like a bird over the Roaring Fork Valley on a tandem paragliding trip. Guests launch from the top of Red Mountain, ride the air currents high above Glenwood Springs and land smoothly in a large open field.

For the next several weeks at least, make the most of what’s left of summer in Glenwood Springs.
