A Glenwood Springs Living Legacy
Bair Ranch has deep roots in Glenwood Canyon. A working ranch since the 1900s, it was one of the first large sheep ranches in Colorado. In 1919, Joe Bair and his two partners bought the property and moved his family and their 2,000 sheep to the ranch lands at the east end of Glenwood Canyon. Word of the large contingent’s arrival by train quickly spread.
According to the history books cattlemen and sheepmen have a rivalrous relationship, at least that was the case in Glenwood Springs. Bair caught wind of a plan to interrupt his family’s travels at Dotsero. To avoid a confrontation, Bair unloaded the retinue from the train at the Shoshone power plant and drove the sheep up the canyon to the ranch. Eventually, the partnership dissolved and Bair became the sole owner of the property.
As the Bairs settled into their new home, they eventually built a swinging bridge so they could more easily cross over the Colorado River. Before that, when the family wanted to go to town, they either caught the train to Glenwood Springs or crossed the river by boat. On the occasions when they needed to bring a large piece of equipment like a wagon onto the ranch, they would contact the Shoshone Dam and ask that they lower the water level of the river!
Today, Bair Ranch is one of just a few large sheep ranches. Given its historical significance, the owners embarked on a mission to preserve its ranching heritage, protecting the property from future development through a land trust established in 2001.
Deeply embedded in the Glenwood Springs community for over a century, the Bairs also wanted to share a breadth of recreational opportunities unique to the Western lifestyle. To achieve this, they joined forces with the outdoor experts at Glenwood Adventure Company. As a result, visitors have access to off-the-beaten-path activities on the private 5,500-acre ranch in Glenwood Canyon that’s just 15 minutes from town. Ranch adventures include off-road tours, horseback riding and sport clay shooting. The alliance between the two entities makes it easy for visitors to explore the Colorado outdoors while in Glenwood Springs whether they’re seeking a heart-pounding adventure or a tranquil escape in nature.

Explore remote, awe-inspiring overlooks with off-road tours at Bair Ranch. RZR side-by-sides and Jeep tours provide an adrenaline-fueled adventure. The open-air RZR vehicles can accommodate up to four people and Jeeps up to five. As a family, couple or group of friends, traverse scenic trails that lead to some of the most jaw-dropping views of Glenwood Canyon.
- Saddle Up for Horseback Riding
If you prefer a more traditional mode of exploration, Bair Ranch offers horseback riding adventures. A stable of friendly equines is at your service and ready to ride, but don’t get too comfortable. This isn’t your ordinary follow-the-leader trail ride. At times, you’ll fan out as a group while wranglers instruct you on the finer points of horsemanship. Another perk of riding at Bair Ranch is the horseback trails don’t intersect with motorsports terrain, ensuring peace and tranquility for the duration of your ride.

Test your marksmanship as you take aim at clay targets launched into the air. Start by shooting one clay pigeon at a time and work your way up to shooting multiple clays from all different directions. With professional instructors guiding you through the process, shooting clays with a shotgun is an activity suitable for both beginners and experienced marksmen alike. For kids 13 and younger interested in shooting sports, the ranch also rents BB guns for target practice.
Ranch Dressing
Keep in mind that Bair Ranch is a real working ranch. When you visit, come prepared to have a great time and get a little grubby. Go for garb that’s not too precious and offers protection from the elements. There’s a reason ranch hands wear pants and long-sleeved shirts. Choose clothes you won’t mind getting dusty and shoes that protect your feet. The ranch sits at a lofty elevation of 6,200 feet and the sun can get intense in the summer, even when there’s a cool breeze coming off the river. For the best experience, remember to wear sunscreen and a hat and to stay hydrated. Helmets will be provided for horseback riding.
