A Hot Springs Loop
Home / Trip Ideas / A Hot Springs Loop
Geothermal springs flow abundantly throughout western Colorado. Five destinations anchor the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop—Glenwood Springs, Ouray, Pagosa Springs, Chaffee County, and Steamboat Springs—offering everything from historic vapor caves to terraced riverside pools.
Soaking in naturally heated, mineral-rich water is a time-honored wellness tradition. Gentle hydrotherapy can help relax muscles, ease tension, and support a sense of calm—making hot springs getaways ideal for reconnecting with friends and family.
Best Time to Visit the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop
Spring (April–June): Comfortable temps and rising flows make this a prime season for scenic drives and shoulder-season value.
Summer (July–August): Long daylight, family travel, and lively pool scenes—book popular venues in advance.
Fall (September–October): Golden foliage, cooler air, and fewer crowds—great for road-tripping and soaking.
Winter (November–March): Snow-draped scenery and serene soaks; check mountain pass conditions and venue hours.
Glenwood Springs
Home to three easily accessible hot springs attractions, Glenwood Springs is a perfect starting point for touring Colorado’s Historic Hot Springs Loop.
• Glenwood Hot Springs Resort
Colorado’s most famous hot springs resort opened in 1888. The main pool is considered the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool, typically around 90°F/32°C, while the Therapy Pool averages ~104°F/40°C. The on-site spa draws from the source spring for select treatments, and the adjacent Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge leverages geothermal heat for winter snowmelt.
• Iron Mountain Hot Springs
Terraced on the banks of the Colorado River, Iron Mountain features multiple soaking pools with temperatures roughly 98–108°F (37–42°C). Select pools have river-stone bottoms for a gentle foot massage, and mountain views add to the calm.
• Yampah Spa & Vapor Caves
Among the few naturally formed vapor caves in North America, these underground steam chambers create a unique geothermal experience. Warm stone rooms and mineral-rich vapor invite deep relaxation.
