FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How old do I need to be to buy marijuana in Colorado?

To purchase, possess or consume pot in Colorado, you must be at least 21 years old and show a government issued ID such as a driver’s license or passport that proves your age.

Where can I buy pot in Glenwood Springs?

Glenwood Springs has numerous licensed retail outlets, called dispensaries, that sell pot and marijuana-infused products.

How much pot can I buy at one time?

Adults 21 and older can purchase and possess up to one ounce of retail marijuana at a time.

What about medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana can only be obtained by Colorado residents with a doctor’s prescription and a state-issued red card. If you’re from out-of-state, you will need to purchase your weed at a licensed retail outlet.

Can I smoke pot in public?

No. Marijuana is still illegal under federal law; lighting up in public could earn you a hefty fine and even jail time. Don’t even think about smoking in downtown Glenwood Springs, in the town’s parks or at Glenwood attractions. Marijuana use is also prohibited on public lands; this includes popular outdoor areas in Glenwood Springs such as Sunlight Mountain Resort and Hanging Lake. It is also important to keep in mind that marijuana is still classified as a schedule I drug according to the federal government. Therefore an individual caught smoking on federals lands (like these two attractions) can still face prosecution.

Where can I smoke weed?

The best place to smoke is at a private residence. Glenwood Springs has some pot-friendly accommodations that can be found via Airbnb or VRBO. When you book your lodging, inquire about the property’s pot policy.

What are edibles?

“Edibles,” as they are known, are food items made with marijuana or infused with marijuana oils. Edibles come in many forms such as brownies, cookies, candies and beverages. To avoid an unpleasant or uncomfortable high, read the warning labels and stick to the dosage recommendations, they are there for a reason.

Are the rules different for edibles?

No. Possession and consumption is still limited to one ounce, like leaf products, they may not be consumed in public places.

Can I have marijuana in my car?

Yes, but don’t smoke it in your car. It is illegal to use any form of pot in a vehicle. The law is similar to the open container law for alcohol. To be safe while driving, keep your stash in the trunk or if your car doesn’t have a trunk, put it behind the last upright seat in your vehicle.

What about driving under the influence of marijuana?

Be smart and don’t do it. It is illegal to drive while impaired. Local law enforcement can issue a DUI citation for violations.

Can I take my pot to another state?

Taking your Colorado weed across state lines is a big no-no. Before leaving the state, if you have not consumed the marijuana you purchased, trash your unwanted stash in a place where it is not accessible to others like a large dumpster.
