COLORADO RIVER FISHING
Castaway for the chance to hook one of the enormous lunkers of the Colorado River through Glenwood Canyon, or find a productive fishing hole on one the canyon’s tributary streams. The magnificent Glenwood Canyon, with the Colorado River as the main artery is ideal for bank fishing. The Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path makes it easy to fish nearly any section of the river.
Side streams, including No Name Creek and Grizzly Creek, that feed into the Colorado River also provide accessible streamside Colorado River fishing. When selecting an ideal fishing hole, look for pockets created by boulders, bends, and depressions in the river bottom. The lower section of the Colorado River is best fished by drift boat. The Colorado supports a large population of brown and rainbow trout. Check with local outfitters to find out what’s hatching, but nymph and streamer fishing are typically the most productive way to hook into these large fish.
Within the stretch of the Colorado River through Glenwood Canyon and Glenwood Springs, referred to as the lower Colorado, is a thriving population of rainbow and brown trout, some of exceptional size. Cutthroat trout are prolific the entire length, especially in close proximity to a tributary like the confluence with the Roaring Fork River or at the intersections of No Name Creek and Grizzly Creek. Many walk-and-wade sections of the Colorado are accessible along the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path, although consider putting in at the Grizzly Creek boat launch and floating to Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs. It’s a leisurely float with just a few rapids along the way.
