Train or Bus: All Aboard the Hot Springs Express

Union Station is a beautiful beaux arts-style transport hub located at 1701 Wynkoop Street in LoDo, Denver’s trendy lower downtown shopping and dining district. The stunning structure is a memorable setting from which to start a getaway to Glenwood Springs. Both the Amtrak California Zephyr and the Bustang conveniently provide transit from Union Station.

Amtrak Update

Amtrak is on a temporary, reduced schedule from now until May 22, 2022, and is running Wednesday through Sunday.  No trains will run into or from Glenwood Springs on Mondays and Tuesdays through May 22, 2022.  After May 22, 2022, Amtrak is expected to run its normal, daily schedule.

  • Denver to Glenwood Springs:  Departs 8:05am from Denver’s Union Station – arrives Glenwood Springs at 1:46pm
  • Glenwood Springs to Denver:  Departs 12:10pm from Glenwood Springs – arrives Denver’s Union Station at 6:38pm

The loading zone for the California Zephyr is located in front of Union Station. If you are checking baggage, plan to arrive 60 minutes before departure, otherwise, 30 minutes is sufficient. The westbound train departs Union Station at 8:05 a.m. and arrives in Glenwood Springs at 1:46 p.m. for a total travel time of five hours 41 minutes. The return trip is a little longer at six hours and 28 minutes, leaving Glenwood Springs at 12:10 p.m. and arriving in Denver at 6:38 p.m.

Ride the Bustang

Another option for getting to and from Glenwood Springs is aboard the easy-to-spot purple Bustang, an inter-regional bus service operated by the Colorado Department of Transportation. Bustang provides daily express service between Denver and Grand Junction with stops in Glenwood Springs and other communities along Interstate 70.. Some travelers who desire more flexibility than Amtrak can provide with its tri-weekly schedule can choose to go one way on the train and take the bus in the other direction.

The Bustang West Line routes depart Union Station from Gate B3 four times daily between  7 a.m. and 5:40 p.m. and arrive at the West Glenwood Springs Park & Ride at 10:50 a.m. and 9:35 p.m. respectively. The eastbound Glenwood Springs to Denver bus departs three times daily between 7:25 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. and rolls into Union Station. Trips take about four hours.

Tickets for the Bustang cost $28 and fares can be purchased online or when boarding (cash only purchase).

As a small mountain town, many Glenwood Springs accommodations are within walking distance of the historic train depot in downtown or near the Bustang West Glenwood springs Park and Ride.


Glenwood Springs Taxi & Bus Services

For ease of getting around Glenwood Springs, Valley Taxi provides reliable ground transportation in the Roaring Fork Valley including pickups and drop-offs at the train depot, Bustang stop and area attractions. The best way to contact Valley Taxi is by phone, 970-404-5181.

The Roaring Fork Valley also features a robust bus service. The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) provides service to Aspen, Snowmass Village, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs and points west of town. Fares vary in price depending on distance and tickets must be purchased in advance from a RFTA farebox. RFTA bus schedules are available here. Ride Glenwood buses that serve only Glenwood Springs, from West Glenwood Springs to South Glenwood Springs with stops in between, cost $1 which can be paid in cash to the driver.
