Beat the Vacation Odds in 2020

What’s keeping your from making your Glenwood Springs vacation plans?

Americans are known for their hard-work ethic. Unfortunately, the unintended consequence of this otherwise admirable trait is too many people don’t take time off for vacationing. By contrast, Europeans take nearly all of theirs, even down to the hour! According to the U.S. Travel Association, even though Americans are earning more days off than in previous years, they are not using them.

  • 55% of American workers report not using all their days off
  • 768 million vacation days went unused in 2018, up 9% from 2017
  • The average employee takes 17.4 days off each year, but uses only nine days for travel
  • 236 million vacation days were forfeited in 2018—equaling $65.5 billion in lost benefits and an individual average of $571 in donated work time

Planning is Key to Taking a Vacation

The majority (83%) of Americans want to use their time off to travel. Those who achieve their vacation goals are the people who make concrete plans, like booking their lodging reservations.

  • Planners are more likely than non-planners to use their time off to travel (39% to 20%)
  • Nearly one-quarter (23%) of non-planners have not taken a vacation or trip in the last two years
