Sunlight Named Best Ski Area within 20 Miles of a Fairy Cave!

Spirits are flying high here at Sunlight after being named by the Aspen Times as Best Resort within 20 Miles of a Fairy Cave. The distinction was announced in the Dec. 19 article “Ranking the rankers” written by Roger Marolt. Sunlight Mountain Resort is nestled in the White River National Forest just 12 miles from Glenwood Caverns, named one of the nation’s 10 best caves by the USA Today.

Once marketed as the Eighth Wonder of the World for its stunning underground scenery, Glenwood Caverns was discovered by C.W. Darrow in 1885. Originally called the Fairy Caves, Darrow saw commercial potential in the caves and was the first to initiate tours.

“We are both excited and humbled by this noble distinction, while some ski areas utilize cloud-seeding to boost their natural snow fall, word is now out that we have secretly been relying on large amounts of all-natural fairy dust to boost our storm totals,” says Troy Hawks, marketing and sales director at Sunlight. Sunlight has received more than 4 feet of snow so far this season.

“What’s more,” says Hawks,  “We understand that our resident fairy is so inspired by the recent attention, she has signed up for ski lessons, and just in time for Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month. Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month is a national campaign aimed at inspiring more people to take up skiing and snowboarding. Now in its 11th year, more than 750,000 beginner skiers and riders have participated in taking lessons at ski areas across the country.

During the month of January, Sunlight will promote its Learn to Shine beginner ski and snowboard package. The deal includes three two-hour lessons, after which students receive a 5-day pass to enjoy for the remainder of the season. Package price is $395.

We are happy to schedule on-snow interviews with the fairy. Please allow 48 hours advance notice.
