Sunlight Mountain Resort.

Just minutes from downtown Glenwood Springs, Sunlight Mountain Resort opened weeks ahead of schedule thanks to new snow-making capabilities, frigid temperatures and several storms that bombarded the region. Sunlight Mountain Resort offers families big Colorado skiing at affordable prices. With the latest precipitation, make fresh tracks on easy greens like Ute and Sun King. For deep powder stashes, venture into the Enchanted Forest—beginner-level tree skiing or the more difficult glades located around the mountain. Sunlight is also home to the East Ridge, an experts-only area with more than a dozen double-black diamond runs.

The newly dedicated Aligator Alleys honors World Cup skier and two-time Olympian Alice McKennis, a native of New Castle, Colorado, who learned to ski from her father at Sunlight.

The name comes from McKennis’ handle on Instagram: @thealigator.

White River National Forest.

Feeling the need for speed? Opt for a full-throttle snowmobiling adventure. Glenwood Adventure Company and Sunlight Mountain Resort lead guided snowmobiling tours that take riders deep into Colorado’s scenic back-country where untracked powder abounds. Navigate undulating terrain on a private ranch in Glenwood Canyon or explore for miles on the Sunlight to Powderhorn Trail (S-P Trail), so named because it begins near Sunlight Mountain in Glenwood Springs and ends at Powderhorn Ski Area near Grand Junction. Snowmobiling tours are an ideal skiing alternative that is suitable for all ability levels. Reservations book quickly, so call ahead! For those with their own machines, the S-P trail is one of Colorado’s top snowmobiling trails. The entire route covers 120 miles with an additional 180 miles of associated trails!
