Sunlight Mountain Resort is Top for Families

For a Colorado ski vacation that will give parents and kids something to cheer about, Sunlight Mountain Resort in Glenwood Springs is affordable for families, mountain-town friendly and offers a wide range of terrain for beginners to expert skiers and riders. Sunlight truly is one of the best family ski resorts in Colorado!

WHY IS SKIING IN COLORADO THE BEST?

  • COLORADO IS A WINTER PARADISE.

The Rocky Mountain state has over 20 ski resorts and an average snowfall of more than 300 inches per season. Low humidity and a dry climate combined with heavy snowfall from November through March create countless fresh track powder days—those slice-of-heaven mornings when the freshly fallen snow is light and fluffy and you are among the first to glide through it. A Colorado ski vacation is your best chance of experiencing a perfect ski day.

  • COLORADO IS HOME TO WORLD-CLASS SKIING.

Many of Colorado’s ski areas are located along Interstate 70, the state’s main east-west transit corridor. It’s here you’ll find the resorts of Summit County—Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin; further along the highway you’ll bump into the mega mountains of Vail and Beaver Creek. These resorts, along with the mountains owned by Aspen SkiCo—Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk—are among the state’s most recognizable names in the ski industry. Along with the name recognition, though, comes a hefty price tag. For example, a walk-up lift ticket at Vail was an eye-popping $189 in 2018 and prices only continue to rise!

  • COLORADO SNOW CONDITIONS.

Thankfully Mother Nature is generous to all ski resorts in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. When she makes it snow, she blankets those famous resorts and Colorado’s more family-friendly (and affordable) ski areas. Those 300 hundred inches of annual snow fall as amply on the big resorts as they do on the smaller ones. Sunlight Mountain Resort is Glenwood Springs’ very own ski area. Since it opened in 1966, this hometown ski resort has been providing a high-quality ski experience to vacationing families from across the US.

SUNLIGHT MOUNTAIN FOR THE BEST FAMILY SKI RESORT IN COLORADO

At first glance, sprawling, rapacious resorts like Vail and others like it might seem to dwarf Sunlight Mountain Resort which touts 680 acres of skiable terrain. A quick second look, however, reveals that size doesn’t always add up to a satisfying ski experience. Smaller resorts often have more to offer than meets the eye, especially for families.

  • Sunlight Mountain is affordable. Reasonably priced lift tickets make it possible to take the whole family on a Colorado ski vacation year after year without breaking the bank. You won’t find $15 bowls of chili here either. In fact, you are welcome to bring a sack lunch or order something delicious from the grill for a fair price.
  • Sunlight Mountain Resort is a Colorado ski area that’s laid back and unpretentious. First and foremost, it’s about having a great day of skiing and snowboarding; not strutting around the deck in $1000 ski outfits.
  • Sunlight offers a nice mix of runs. Twenty percent of the mountain is beginner slopes, 55 percent intermediate, 20 percent advanced and 5 is experts-only.
  • Those 680 acres include enviable terrain. Ute Trail is one of the longest runs in the state at 2.5 miles long and Sunlight Extreme is a double black diamond area with pitches that rival some of the steepest runs in the state.
  • When you do want to show off or even just practice a trick, do it at Sunlight Mountain’s terrain park adjacent to the base lodge, where small, medium and large jump lines give riders and skiers ample opportunities to demonstrate their best moves.
  • You can go your separate ways and not get lost at Sunlight Mountain Resort. The ski area is designed around the ski lodge located at the base. All the runs funnel toward it. This simple layout means every member of your family or group can have the experience they want. While some ski the powder stashes in the glades, others can stay on the bunny slopes, and those who like to ride the bumps or terrain park can spend time there. For lunch or at the end of the day, just meet at the lodge to catch up and swap stories.

Glenwood Springs is a true Colorado mountain ski town. Home to multiple hot springs, Glenwood Springs has some of the best après ski anywhere. Soak in the world’s largest hot springs pool at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort or in the 16 soaking pools at the riverside Iron Mountain Hot Springs. Both are family-friendly. Dining out is satisfying too. Glenwood Springs restaurants have enough variety to appeal to the tastes of every member of the family. As for lodging in Glenwood, there is a huge inventory of rooms with affordable rates even at the height of ski season. Book early for the best selection, however.
